Job seekers often find it uneasy to satisfy an employee. This I won’t say is your fault; it’s just due to fierce competition. Employers upon seeing another different resume may decide to ignore one that’s already tagged best by him. This is why it can be hard to be noticed among many job seekers.

That being said, here are some things you’ll need to work on to stand out as a job seeker.

  1. Work on your resume Name

Aside from every other thing to write in a resume, also work on making the resume appearance. This includes the type of fonts used, spacing and the likes. One other thing to work on is naming your resume.

In some cases, you might be asked to send your resume via email or online. Take for example, your resume is named resume.doc or cv.doc. That means you actually want to stress your hiring manager’s life. It takes less than 30secs to rename your resume to your personal name and include the job title. E.g. ‘Your Name – Job Title.

It won’t be surprising if your hiring manager place your resume aside just because it has no file name. Naming your resume makes it easier.

  1. Write a customized cover letter

The cover letter is just to show your employer that you’re good for the job. It does not necessarily need to include all of your skills and background; just a compelling piece capable of putting you in the best position for the job is enough.

To do this, make proper research on the company you’re writing the letter to; know what their values and cultures are, and then incorporate it in your writing.

In as much as your qualifications matter, writing a very good cover letter could give you an extra edge over others in the race for getting the job.

  1. Quantify your achievements

This is one of the contents your resume should contain. Include not only your major achievements but also add the stats and numbers to aid more credibility to your profile.

This helps your hiring manager envisage the quality you’ll potentially bring in if you’re employed. Here is an example:

This involves making a call or email to follow up after your job application or interview.

After a successful interview, try do follow up in a couple of days. This shows your employer how interested you’re in the job. In addition, this could even make your application to be reviewed and reconsidered.

By doing this, you stand out as a job seeker and therefore increase the possibility of your employment.

However, take caution when you want do follow up. I recommend you do the follow up once and should be few days after your interview. Anything more than once could go the other way round. Meanwhile, depending on response from the first follow up attempt, it may require you try again the second time.

This depends on the type of job you’re submitting an application for. For example if you’re a graphic designer, include a link to a portfolio of your work; this helps you stand out as a job seeker among others.

It’s easy to write ‘I’m a graphic designer in a letter or resume’; but it’s what you have in your portfolio that will matter most.

By so doing, you’re not only telling your employer that you are a graphic designer, you’re also telling him that you it’s something you know and capable of doing.

In addition to the 5 tips listed above, say thank you after your interview. This could be in form of hand written note. It leaves a lasting impression No need for writing something long; a short message is nice. See an example below:

‘Thank you for your time. It was a great pleasure to meet you and learn more about (your company) Company X. I’m really excited about the possibility of working with your team.’
