American Association of University Women Fellowships and Grants

AAUW (the American Association of University Women) awards International Fellowships for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents.

The American Association of University Women also awards fellowships and grants and provides support to women who wish to obtain graduate degrees and develop projects to make an impact in their communities.

Since its establishment, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has helped over 10,000 women from more than 132 countries break through barriers and pursue their dreams of obtaining graduate degrees and making an impact in their communities.

There are many more fellowships and grants available. Before we dive straight to the AAUW fellowship and grants, let’s look at how to be eligible for the awards.

How to be Eligible for AAUW Fellowship and Grants

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have citizenship in a country aside the U.S. or must possess a nonimmigrant visa if residing in the U.S. Women who are currently, or expect to be during the fellowship year, a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or dual citizen with the U.S. and another country are not eligible.
  • Hold an academic degree earned in the U.S. or abroad equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree completed by 15 November 2021.
  • Intend to devote herself full-time to the proposed academic plan during the fellowship year
  • Intend to return to her home country to pursue a professional career
  • Be proficient in English and confirm proficiency by submitting a valid ETS TOEFL* (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score or other acceptable verification.
  • Postdoctoral applicants must provide proof of their doctorate degree; hold a doctorate classified as a research degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., D.B.A., D.M.) or an M.F.A. by November 15, 2021; and indicate where they will conduct their research.
  • Master’s/first professional degree and doctoral applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. accredited institution located in the United States. during the fellowship year.

Note: Women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents.  Preference is given to women who show prior commitment to the advancement of women and girls through civic, community, or professional work.

How to Apply for AAUW

You can apply clicking on apply now on the AAUW portal. Create an account and fill all required details. in the following areas.

Provide three recommendations from professors or professional colleagues well acquainted with you, your work, and your academic background, in striving towards scholarly pursuits. When possible, recommenders should be professors or professional colleagues in the applicant’s home country who can speak about the applicant’s qualifications and about the country’s need for the specialized skill or knowledge she plans to acquire with her proposed study or research. AAUW does not accept references from dossier services, such as Parment or Interfolio.


Proof of highest degree: Transcripts from the college or university where the highest degree (not a certificate) was obtained. Highest degree must be at least a bachelor’s degree and must be earned on or before November 15, 2021. The Transcripts must include a list of courses taken and grades received.

If the institution does not provide a transcript that contains the list of courses and grades, or the degree did not require coursework, an official letter from the institution where the degree was received that includes the degree completion date must be uploaded.

Do not upload copies of additional certificates or other documents the applicant may have received during her education.

Proof of current enrollment (currently enrolled applicants only): Upload transcripts/lists of courses/institution letters from the college or university in which the applicant is currently enrolled, if she is enrolled.

Many transcripts do not include current coursework. If fall 2021 semester grades are not available and are not on your transcript, a list of courses taken that semester must be provided by the institution’s Office of the Registrar.

Proof of a doctorate or M.F.A. degree (postdoctoral applicants only): Upload any one of the following:

  • Transcript showing degree and date received (must be on or before November 15, 2021).
  • Official letter from institution where degree was received that includes the degree completion date.
  • Copy of diploma showing date degree was received (must be on or before November 15, 2021).
  • Proof of English proficiency: Upload one of the following:
  • Official report of acceptable and valid TOEFL or IELTS score. Scores are valid for two years. Institutional TOEFL scores and other English proficiency test scores will not be accepted.
  • Minimum acceptable scores are as follows:
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test): 79
  • TOEFL Essentials: 8.5
  • Revised TOEFL Paper-Delivered Test: 60
  • IELTS: 6.5
  • Written statement verifying the applicant’s native language is English.
  • Academic transcript or diploma confirming one of the following:
  • Secondary diploma or undergraduate degree is from an English-speaking institution.


One semester of full-time study in the applicant’s discipline at an English-speaking institution between November 2019 and November 2021.


  • A certified English translation is required for all components provided in a foreign language. Translations must bear a mark of certification or official signature that the translation is true and complete.
  • All transcripts provided must include the applicant’s full name, the school’s name, all courses, and all grades, as well as any other information requested in the application instructions.

AAUW Scholarships

AAUW Scholarships is one of the world’s largest sources of funding for graduate women. It has provided over $4.3 million in funding for fellowships and grants to 270 outstanding women and non-profit organizations in the 2019/2020 session.

Category of Available AAUW Scholarships

Below are the categories of AAUW scholarships and its features.

  1. Career Development Grants

Who may apply: Women pursuing a certificate or degree to advance their careers, change careers, or reenter the workforce and whose bachelor’s degree was received at least five years before the award period

Funding: $2,000–$12,000

2. Research Publication Grant in Engineering, Medicine, and Science

Who may apply: This grant is open to Women conducting basic research in engineering, medicine, or the physical/biological sciences. Applicant must have a doctorate degree in one of those fields. The grantee is required to publish their research in a scholarly scientific publication and be listed as a primary author.

Funding: $10,000–$35,000

3. Community Action Grants

Who may apply: Individuals, AAUW branches and states, and nonprofit organizations may apply. This is to fund innovative programs or non-degree research projects that promote education and equity for women and girls

Funding: One-year grant, $2,000-$7,000

Two-year grant, $5,000-$10,000

4. Selected Professions Fellowships

Who may apply: Women pursuing full-time study in a master’s or professional degree program in which women are underrepresented, including STEM, law, business, and Medicine

Funding: $5,000–$18,000

5. International Fellowships

This is awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions are supported.

Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated a commitment to women and girls. Recipients return to their home countries to become leaders in business, government, academia, community

American Fellowships

American Fellowships support women seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave or for preparing completed research for publication. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. One-year postdoctoral research leave fellowships, dissertation fellowships, and summer/short-term research publication grants are offered.

The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) works to combat sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace. LAF works to combat sex discrimination through its campus outreach programs, a resource library and online advocacy tools, and various research reports. LAF also provides support to workplace sex discrimination cases that have the potential to make a difference for all women.

Women of Distinction Awards                                                                

Women of Distinction Awards are awarded by AAUW and NASPA as a part of the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. The Women of Distinction program pays tribute to women leaders who stood out with great accomplishments in their professions or their communities.

Eleanor Roosevelt Fund Award

From the AAUW Educational Foundation, This award from the AAUW Educational Foundation is to honor individuals, project, organization or institution for major contributions to equity and education. Quite a number of Texas AAUW branch members and educators receive the Eleanor Roosevelt fund award.

AAUW Recognition Award for Emerging Scholars

This is to recognize the early professional achievements of a no tenured woman scholar who has a record of exceptional early accomplishment and has shown promise for future distinction.

Speaking Out for Justice Award

This is to recognize a nationally prominent individual who has advocated for change on behalf of women and girls.

Benefits and Value of the International Scholarship

Master’s/first professional degree: USD 18,000

Doctoral: USD 20,000

Postdoctoral: USD 30,000

AAUW International fellowship and grants are available for:

  • Educational expenses.
  • Living expenses.
  • Dependent child care.
  • Travel to professional meetings, conferences or seminars that does not exceed 10% of the fellowship total.

International Fellowship funds are not available for:

  • Purchase of equipment.
  • Indirect costs.
  • Research assistants.
  • Previous expenditures, deficits, or repayment of loans.
  • Publication costs.
  • Institutional (overhead) costs.
  • Tuition for dependent’s education.
  • Grants-in-aid for less than a full academic year or travel grants.
  • Travel to or from a fellow’s home country.
  • Travel to or from the fellow’s research location, if abroad (does not apply to fellows who are GWI members with AAUW approval to study or research in a country other than their own).
  • AAUW regards the acceptance of a fellowship as a contract requiring fulfillment of the following terms
