Forbes 30 under 30 is a set of lists issued every year by an American Business Magazine, Forbes and its regional editions on game changers under 30 years old. The list covers categories of Business, Creative, Technology, Sport and Science, and Health.

The lists recognize 600 businesses and industry figures of which 30 are selected in twenty industries each.  Asia and Europe have ten categories each for a total of 300 each, while Africa has a single list of 30 people. These lists may include founders, philanthropists, fashionist, filmmakers, foodies and so on.

  • Recommendation – Recommended by someone
  • Nomination (You can be nominated by the Forbes team) or Past honorees are asked annually to nominate persons they’d like to recommend for the list.

What Are the Nominations Requirements and Criteria?

These are requirements for the Business & Technology categories:

  • Must be 29 years of age or younger as at December 31st of the application year
  • Nominee must be an entrepreneur
  • You must have a legitimately registered business in Africa
  • Nominees must have taken financial risk to create an impact in the society
  • Your business or businesses must be 2 years or older
  • You have to employ Africans
  • Your business must be profit-generating
  • Nominee must be available and prepared for partaking in the Under 30 Meet-Up
  • All applications have to be submitted in the English language

For Creative:

  • Must be 29 years of age or younger as at December 31st of the application year
  • Nominee must be creative
  • You must be influential
  • You must be an African or based in the region
  • You should be earning a significant income
  • Nominee must have a proven creative record, which not less than 2 years
  • Nominee must be available and prepared for partaking in the Under 30 Meet-Up
  • Entrepreneurship & social impact is an added advantage
  • All applications have to be submitted in the English language

For Sports:

  • Must be 29 years of age or younger as at December 31st of the application year
  • Nominee must be a sports person
  • You should be earning significant income
  • Nominee has to be representing a team from Africa
  • Nominee must have a proven creative record, which not less than 2 years
  • Have a number of endorsement deals
  • Nominee has to be available and prepared for partaking in the Under 30 Meet-Up
  • Entrepreneurship & social impact is an added advantage
  • All applications have to be submitted in the English language

After meeting the above listed requirements, you should include the following in your 30 under 30 entry.

  • A short reason you should be considered for the Under 30 community
  • Links to published material about nominee

How to apply for the Forbes 30 under 30

You can apply by filling a form in any of their four major international centers for the application submission. They include Israel, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, and Boston. Ensure that you provide accurate information before submitting it.

If your business is a business with joint ownership, include the names of your business co-founders, or business partners who meet the requirement of 29 years or younger.

Note: You won’t be considered if aged out (over 30 years).

As an applicant, you can choose more than one category to apply under. For instance, if you are under creative try to find solutions using digital or tech tools to showcase your creativity or art, you can apply under the creative and Technology category.

There are 10 categories for the Europe list. You can pick one of the categories above, and Forbes will send your nomination to the right category.

How the Forbes 30 under 30 List is Determined

Following the Nomination, Recommendation and application process, the following are the ways which the list is to be determined.

  • A 600-person list will then be voted on by a category judge panel.
  • “Reporters, editors and expert judges consider a variety of factors, including funding, revenue, social impact, inventiveness and potential,” Forbes explains on their website.
  • “Nominee shortlists are shared with each category’s four-judge panel who select the final 30 lists in their assigned category.”
  • The list also extends to Europe and Asia where another 300 honorees are chosen across 10 categories.

Countries Eligible

Since the lists have been expanded to continental lists for Asia, Europe and Africa, it means countries under these continents are eligible for the Forbes 30 under 30 lists. It covers the whole Asia-Pacific region, which includes countries like New Zealand, Australia, and Oceana (except the Middle East).

If you reside in the above stated region, and your business and impact are primarily in these countries, you are eligible, irrespective of your country of origin or citizenship.

Note: Those have gained recognition from the Forbes 30 under 30 lists previously do not qualify for another nomination.
